The “Second Town Journey” is a trip to discover values and lifestyles not found in Tokyo by staying long-term at the destination, rather than just sightseeing. For the first destination, we chose Onomichi. Our editorial team will share the appeal of the creative and welcoming people living in Onomichi from a Tokyo perspective.
When choosing a travel destination, it’s natural to seek “things not found in Tokyo.” Scenic nature, local gourmet, and a different pace of life that Tokyo lacks… We look for the extraordinary to relieve stress and find solace.
With the spread of remote work, combining vacation and work through “workation” has become possible, offering more opportunities for long-term stays at travel destinations. Traveling for more than a week, while incorporating remote work and relationships, will expand the range of experiences that offer “something not found in Tokyo.”
It’s a profound experience, allowing you to live a life you can’t in Tokyo and discover aspects of yourself you weren’t aware of. Initially, it feels like a tourist trip no matter where you go, but with a longer stay, you’ll feel the real pulse of the city as a place to live and have opportunities to connect with local people.
This leads to discovering values and lifestyles that you didn’t have before. Moreover, unlike the saying “what happens on the trip stays on the trip,” these deep experiences will positively influence your life and way of living even after returning to Tokyo.
Spending time in a daily life that’s not just in Tokyo and finding a version of yourself that doesn’t exist in Tokyo. Feeding that experience back into your life in Tokyo. This is a new form of travel where you live at your destination as if it were a second town to Tokyo.
This time, we chose the Onomichi area in Hiroshima Prefecture as our travel destination, our second town. It’s a place we wanted to visit first for a long stay to discover a way of life and aspects of ourselves not found in Tokyo.
In the past, Tokyo, as a major metropolis, was the hub of cultural dissemination, but now that creativity is spreading to the regions. Onomichi is a symbol of this shift. Here, people with a strong spirit of challenge, who carve their own paths, gather friends and continually create new creative movements.
Onomichi, with its rare landscape surrounded by sea and mountains, is dotted with historical buildings from various eras, creating a unique urban space. When talking about Onomichi, one cannot overlook its picturesque streets and the culture rooted in the area. This atmosphere is ingrained in the town thanks to the proactive efforts of locals with strong wills.
By getting to know Onomichi, living daily life there, and connecting with its people, we, as editors working in Tokyo, hoped to discover new values and perspectives on work. With this expectation, the editorial team, together with photographer Moron-no-non, embarked on a long-term stay. Here, we record the experiences gained from that journey.
